I remember my conversation with my husband four months ago like it was yesterday. I told him I played games with my mind to "like my job again.” Yep. I had long conversations with myself before I walked into my department. Here are a few:

  1. "Okay, Selendra, you are here to provide a service and product regardless of what happens; you are only one person."
  2. "This place is just one stop on the road to your success."
  3. "Girl, you are being tested and building new skills."
  4. Here's my favorite one, "If you leave, who will care as much as you"?

All bull-shit. I should have packed my bags and headed for the hills at the end of my first week. Will a new pair of eyes or mindset help you rekindle your passion or enthusiasm for work?

If you are exhausted with work, will taking a break or sabbatical help you approach work differently and discover something fresh and interesting about your job? Sometimes a break away from work can help you step away and see the big picture. The break can be the opportunity you need to solve some of your work-related problems and gain a new perspective. Some of you have so much PTO you can't roll it over, but you continue to show up to work just to complain that you are too tired to continue working like this.

Looking at work with a new set of eyes can help you stay at work longer, but how long can you play games with your mind? The conversation that I had with my husband ended with him saying, "Selendra, if you have to convince yourself to go to work, you are at the wrong place or in the wrong career. Put in your two-week notice, and do what you really enjoy". One week later, I put in my notice, and two weeks later, I was presented with an incredible opportunity. #dontblockyourblessings
